How long does it take for HIV to show up on a test?
Most current tests detect HIV between 2 and 6 weeks after exposure, depending on the technique used. To rule it out reliably, it is usually recommended to confirm the result from 6 weeks onwards and, in some cases, repeat it at 3 months. If the exposure happened less than 72 hours ago, the priority is not a test but going to an emergency department to assess post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP).
What is the HIV window period?
The window period is the time between infection and the moment a test can detect it. During those weeks a person may have the virus, pass it on and still get a negative result. That is why the timing of the test matters as much as the test itself.
How long it takes to show, by type of test
These timeframes are approximate and depend on each person and technique:
Tests that detect the virus's genetic material (RNA, by PCR): can detect it earlier, around 1–4 weeks.
Fourth-generation blood tests (p24 antigen + antibodies): detect most infections between 2 and 6 weeks.
Antibody-only tests (for example, some rapid tests): may need up to 12 weeks.
During your consultation we explain which technique is used in your case and whether you should repeat the test later.
Book a test · No appointment needed at C. del Dos de Maig, 283 (Eixample, Barcelona). Same-day results if the sample is taken before 16:00.
If the exposure was less than 72 hours ago
There is a preventive treatment, post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP), which greatly reduces the risk of infection if started as soon as possible and always within the first 72 hours. In that case, go to a hospital emergency department, where they will assess whether it is appropriate. A test on the same day cannot tell you whether you were infected during that encounter, although it can be useful as a baseline.
Symptoms of recent HIV infection
Some people develop flu-like symptoms 2 to 4 weeks after infection:
Fever and tiredness.
Sore throat.
Swollen lymph nodes.
Skin rash or muscle aches.
Many others notice nothing. Symptoms cannot confirm or rule out HIV: only a test can.
When to get an HIV test
After sex without a condom with a partner of unknown status, from 2–6 weeks depending on the test.
If you have had an STI such as syphilis or gonorrhoea, as they increase the risk.
If you are starting a relationship and want to stop using condoms.
Regularly if you have new or multiple partners.

Frequently asked questions
Is a negative test at 2 weeks final?
No. It can be useful, but at 2 weeks some infections are not yet detectable. It is usual to confirm from 6 weeks, or later depending on the test.
Do I need to fast for an HIV test?
Not for the HIV test. Only if you combine it with other tests that require fasting.
Is HIV treatable?
Yes. Modern antiretroviral treatment allows a long, normal life, and a person with a sustained undetectable viral load does not transmit the virus sexually.
Where are you?
