STIs without symptoms: why get tested even if you feel fine
Yes, it's worth getting tested even if you have no symptoms. Many sexually transmitted infections (STIs) show no signs for months or even years, but they can still be passed on to a partner and, without treatment, cause health problems. The only way to know is to get tested.
STIs that often have no symptoms
Chlamydia: in most cases it goes unnoticed, especially in women.
Gonorrhoea: often without symptoms in women and in throat or rectal infections.
Mycoplasma genitalium and trichomonas: may cause mild discomfort or none at all.
HIV, hepatitis B and C: can go years without clear symptoms.
Human papillomavirus (HPV): usually causes no symptoms; some types are linked to genital warts and others to precancerous lesions.
Why early detection matters
Without treatment, some STIs can lead to infertility, pregnancy complications or chronic disease. And while they go undiagnosed, they keep being passed on. The good news: most bacterial STIs are cured with simple treatment if detected early.
Who should get tested?
If you have a new partner or several partners.
If you've had sex without a condom.
If your partner has been diagnosed with an STI.
Before stopping condom use with a steady partner.
If you are planning a pregnancy.
How often should you get checked?
With a new partner or several partners, at least once a year is recommended, or every 3–6 months if the risk is higher. The doctor will tell you what's best in your case.
Symptoms worth watching for
Pain or burning when urinating.
Unusual or bad-smelling discharge.
Itching, irritation, sores or warts in the intimate area.
Discomfort during sex.
Which test to choose if you have no symptoms
For a check-up without symptoms, Pack 1 – Basic STI (€160) covers HIV, hepatitis B and C and 7 bacterial infections (chlamydia, gonorrhoea, Mycoplasma, Ureaplasma and trichomonas). If you want to check everything, Pack 2 (€250) adds syphilis, herpes 1 and 2 and other infections. In both cases: Real-Time PCR, same-day results (before 4:00 pm) and a medical consultation included.
Get your check-up in Barcelona without an appointment – Sermed Laboratorio, Carrer del Dos de Maig, 283 (Eixample). Monday to Friday 10:00–20:00, Saturdays 10:00–18:00.
For guidance only: this does not replace a medical consultation or diagnosis. If you have severe symptoms or an emergency, call 112.
